Friday Favorites: Favorite Reads of 2019

Welcome to the final Friday Favorites of the year!

Well, not only is this the final Friday Favorites of the year, but it is also the final Friday Favorites ever. *sad face* I’m shifting some of my priorities in regards to blogging and bookish stuff next year and I won’t be able to keep up with a weekly thing. I have enjoyed hosting this weekly thing and I’ve loved everyone’s posts! I am incredibly appreciative to each and every person who has participated. But the time has come for Friday Favorites to end.

This week’s topic is favorite reads of 2019. Since I did favorite 2019 releases last week (yeah, I didn’t plan these last two out very well), I am focusing on favorite backlist books reads this year. Basically, all my favorite reads from the year that were released before 2019. Let’s do this!

The Illuminae Files by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff – Considering I’m rereading this series for the 3rd time this year, you could say I’m a fan. My first read of the series back in 2018 was of the physical book and you could say I fell in love. But when this series really got to me, was when I started doing my audio rereads. The audiobooks from this series are quite possibly the single most perfect audiobooks I’ve ever listened to.

Mistborn Era 2 by Brandon Sanderson – It’s really hard for me to express just how much I love these books. So many people fawn over the original Mistborn trilogy, but my true love for Brandon Sanderson is firmly based on Mistborn Era 2. Very few books have made me feel quite as many emotions as these have. The character arcs, the magic system, the setting, the tie ins with the original trilogy. All perfect. Basically I do the chef kiss in my head every time I finish a reread of these books.

The Themis Files by Sylvain Neuvel – While not quite as perfect as The Illuminae Files audiobooks, these are full cast and fully awesome. Told through interview transcripts and the like, The Themis Files is another stellar sci-fi series that I cannot recommend enough. While the final book didn’t quite stand up to the first two, the series as a whole is epic without being overpowering. If you like science fiction, these are a must read.

The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater – Wow, these books! These damn books. I knew I was going to love The Raven Cycle, but I was not prepared for just how much I would love them. Reading these brought forth feelings I thought had long since died with my induction to adulthood. Full of magic realism and dark whimsy, The Raven Cycle is one of my favorite series of all time.

Arc of a Scythe by Neal Shusterman – Really, this is a series that really has to be experienced. I’m not sure there is much I could say to really describe it properly. These books were one of the biggest surprise reads of my year.

The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells – Look, just…read these. Go read them now.

Skyward by Brandon Sanderson – I love this YA science fiction novel from Sanderson. M-BOT and Doomslug FOREVER!

The Crown’s Game by Evelyn Skye – There was just something so magical and perfect about this novel. I loved every minute of it.

The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell – This was a reread to prepare for the 2nd book in the series (which I still haven’t read, oops!) and I had forgotten just how much I love it. The slow burn enemies to almost lovers is perfection and I love me some time travel shenanigans.
